520			_aLe projet d’envergure d’écrire une histoire de Belgique « des origines à nos jours » mené à bien par Henri Pirenne répond dans son chef à une volonté de replacer dans une trame pluriséculaire une histoire « nationale ». Le xve siècle qui voit les ducs de Bourgogne rassembler et structurer les principautés des anciens Pays-Bas constitue pour lui un moment clé de cette trame. En dépit des réserves que l’approche résolument patriotique de l’érudit a pu susciter, la démonstration de Pirenne ne manque pas de force et sa vision de l’œuvre bourguignonne autour, comme on l’écrit souvent, de la construction d’un « État », reste à la base de fructueux débats associant historiographie et politique.
520			_aThe large-scale project of writing a history of Belgium ‘from its origins to the present day’ carried out by Henri Pirenne is a response to the desire to place a ‘national’ history within a multi-secular framework. The fifteenth century, which saw the dukes of Burgundy bring together and structure the principalities of the former Netherlands, is for him a key moment in this framework. Despite the reservations that the resolutely patriotic approach of the scholar may have aroused, Pirenne’s demonstration is not lacking in strength and his vision of the Burgundian work around, as is often written, the construction of a «state», remains the basis of fruitful debates associating historiography and politics.
