520			_aHippolyte Taine cherche à consacrer l’histoire comme une science capable de déterminer les lois de l’avenir par la compréhension du passé. Il développe à cet effet une méthode historique naturaliste et déterministe. Sa condamnation de la Révolution française et du jacobinisme l’ont fait classer parmi les penseurs contre-révolutionnaires et traditionnalistes. Toutefois, se muant en historien des idées politiques, il s’interroge sur la place de l’individu dans le corps social et face au pouvoir. Et c’est finalement en historien conservateur mais libéral que Taine tente à partir de l’histoire de fonder une science de la politique qui mette la France à l’abri des convulsions qui l’ont marqué durant le xixe siècle.
520			_aIn his endeavor to consecrate history a science capable of determining the laws of the future by its understanding of the laws of the past, Hippolyte Taine developed a deterministic naturalist historical method. Due to his condemnation of Jacobinism and the French revolution, he passed off as a counter-revolutionary traditionalist thinker. Nevertheless, as he turned to the history of political ideas, he investigated the place of individuals within society and in their relationship with the powers that be. Ultimately, Taine worked as a liberal conservative historian founding a political science which he hoped would protect France from the political upheavals which afflicted it during the 19th century.
