520 _aBy examining the responses to racial violence that two southern states proposed during the Reconstruction period, this article sheds light on the diverse nature of the federal military intervention and establishes the significance of political autonomy on the limits and meaning of freedom. Mindful of the local, regional, and federal experiences, the article connects the legislative records of the states of Tennessee and Alabama to the struggle between due process advocates and “rough justice” defenders. By doing so, it adds to the rich literature on the origins of the Jim Crow South.
