Sie bespricht die psychischen Auswirkungen der unvermeidlichen Veränderungen des Körpers, welche eine traumatische Überforderung, ja eine Erschütterung der Identität darstellen und sie beschreibt anhand von Beispielen verschiedene klinische Ausdrucksformen, die mit dem Erleben des Alterns verbunden sind : depressiver Rückzug, Somatose, Reaktivierung des Aktuellen, wobei sie zu zeigen versucht, dass diese notwendige neue Verbindung von Psyche und Soma auch von der jeweiligen individuellen Geschichte abhängt. Sie geht also von einer dynamischen Perspektive aus und betrachtet die Probleme unter dem Gesichtspunkt eines Prozesses, dem Alterungsprozess, ja sogar einer Arbeit des Alterns.
