La notion de qualité présente dans Le Projet (1895), et reprise dans l’Abrégé, est considérée par les auteurs comme ayant, à l’instar de la figurabilité de 1900, une valeur organisatrice, d’où la nécessité pour la psychanalyse contemporaine d’une prise en compte de la qualité. En pratique cela suppose que l’analyste travaille non seulement avec les notions de refoulement et de 1re topique, mais également en tenant compte d’une dynamique qualitative transformationnelle.
