Le port ostentatoire de vêtements en soie, de couleur pourpre et or, et de longues tuniques couvrant ses bras et ses jambes, dénote un goût pour le luxe peu compatible avec la simplicité affectée par Auguste, le fondateur du régime. Les parures de bijoux de prix, les couronnes d’or et de pierres précieuses et le maquillage, tout concourt à faire d’Élagabal une figure contraire aux attentes des Romains et à expliquer, au moins en partie, le rejet dont il fit l’objet. | ||
