520			_aAux xve et xvie siècles, dans la lagune de Venise, il n’est pas aisé de définir ce qu’est le popolo. Le terme est ambigu et s’il désigne, comme ailleurs en Italie, un collectif d’habitants définis par la fragilité économique autant qu’un concept politique, il renvoie par ailleurs à de nombreuses autres réalités sociales, politiques et juridiques. Dans les écrits théoriques et politiques produits à Venise entre la seconde moitié du xve siècle et le premier tiers du xvie siècle, on retrouve en effet une multitude d’usages et des définitions variées dont cet article tente de faire l’inventaire de façon à démêler la polysémie du terme. Il apparaît ainsi comment ces imprécisions et indécisions reflètent autant les hésitations des auteurs que les choix des patriciens qui, en ne définissant pas précisément ce qu’est le peuple, finissent par priver les habitants d’une capacité d’action collective et de la possibilité de penser les collectifs auxquels ils appartiennent.

The term is ambiguous and if, as elsewhere in Italy, it designates a collective of inhabitants defined by economic fragility as much as a political concept, it also refers to many other social, political and legal realities. In the theoretical and political writings produced in Venice between the second half of the fifteenth century and the first third of the sixteenth century, we can find a multitude of uses and varied definitions, which this article attempts to inventory in order to unravel the polysemy of the term popolo . It thus appears how these imprecisions and indecisions reflect both the hesitations of the authors and the choices of the patricians who, by not defining precisely what the people is, end up depriving the inhabitants of a capacity for collective action and of the possibility of thinking about the collectives to which they belong.
