520			_aL’an iii n’est pas le principal moment de production de l’historiographie de la Révolution pendant la Révolution ; dans un premier temps, la recherche de vérités d’ordre judiciaire semble l’emporter sur la recherche d’une vérité historique. Ceux qui écrivent cette dernière sont exclus du jeu politique ou bien craignent de le devenir. Malgré leurs divergences, ils se présentent comme victimes ou porte-parole de victimes. Le consensus qui se dégage naît de là : tout le monde est d’accord pour condamner Robespierre et la terreur. Le rapport à la vérité de ces textes est cependant ambivalent : fondés en partie sur des mensonges ou des fantasmes, ils attachent une importance nouvelle à l’établissement de preuves historiques, par la publication de pièces justificatives. La vérité ainsi construite a été efficace : l’écriture de la « Terreur » comme repoussoir politique est un récit fondateur particulièrement puissant.
520			_aThe Year iii is not the main moment when the historiography of the Revolution was produced during the Revolution ; initially, the search for judicial truths seemed to take precedence over the search for a historical truth. Those who write history were excluded from the political game or feared being excluded. In spite of their divergences, they presented themselves as victims or spokespersons for victims. That is the origin of the consensus that has emerged : everyone is in agreement when it comes to condemning Robespierre and the Reign of Terror. How close these writings are to the truth is however, a matter of ambivalence : based partly on lies or fantasy, they attach a new importance to the establishment of historical evidence, by publishing supporting documents. The truth thus constructed has been effective : the writing of the « Reign of Terror » as a political deterrent is a particularly powerful founding narrative.
