| 520 | _aÀ partir d’une combinaison d’observations directes, entretiens et questionnaire auprès du public, cet article propose de comparer les décisions de contrôle des policiers français et allemands, en rapportant ces pratiques à des styles d’action policière. Si les objectifs sont similaires (lutte contre la criminalité, affirmation de l’autorité, collecte d’information), les modalités diffèrent. Les policiers français contrôlent plus souvent que leurs collègues allemands. Les minorités visibles constituent une cible bien plus récurrente des initiatives policières de contrôle en France qu’en Allemagne. Les logiques d’action qui sous-tendent ces pratiques reposent sur la formation, l’ ethos professionnel (plus ou moins tournée vers le citoyen), la politique policière nationale (et de la définition de la performance) et l’organisation policière locale. | ||
| 520 | _aLogics of checkingThis paper, which is based on direct observation and interviews of police officers and also on questionnaires administered to the public, compares decisions of French and German police officers regarding identity checks and puts them in the context of the respective styles of policing. Even though the objectives are similar (fighting crime, asserting authority, gathering intelligence), the extent, frequency and targets of controls differ. French police do more identity checks than their German counterparts. Ethnic minorities are a more recurrent target of police action in France than in Germany. The underlying logics of action are determined by training, professional ethos (more or less citizen-oriented), national policing objectives (and definition of performance) and local police organisation. | ||
