L’appel aux mathématiques y est lié à la « révolution théorique et quantitative » des années 1970-1972. Avec un retard de vingt ans sur la New Geography venue des États-Unis et de la Suède, la discipline s’est mobilisée, par un effort de formation des jeunes enseignants-chercheurs, par une réflexion conjuguant quantification et théorisation et par une réorientation vers les notions d’espace, de système et de dynamique, avec un développement des techniques d’analyse spatiale et de modélisation. | ||
