520			_aRésumé Cet article vise à montrer la spécificité de la tradition démographique française à partir des travaux d’Adolphe Landry. Législateur, économiste et démographe, Landry croise différents champs disciplinaires pour construire une nouvelle théorie de la population dont le but est de fonder une politique publique large, englobant les problématiques économiques, sociales et culturelles. Deux temps structurent notre démarche : d’une part, nous présentons l’origine de la réflexion de Landry qui tente de transposer la notion économique d’optimum de production à celle d’optimum de population, ce qui implique l’utilisation des nouveaux instruments statistiques émergeant dans la France des années 1930. D’autre part, nous montrons le glissement opéré par Landry, de l’optimum de population dont les contours et la détermination restent flous à l’élaboration d’une théorie explicative des dynamiques de population : la « révolution démographique ».
520			_aThe aim of this paper is to understand the specificity of French tradition of demography based on the work of Adolphe Landry. Legislator, demographer, and economist, Landry combines different disciplines to develop a new theory of population, which justifies a policy encompassing the economic, the social and the cultural levels. Two aspects are our focus : on the one hand, we expose the way he approaches the optimum of population through the economic optimum of production, with the help of new statistical and « demographic techniques » that emerged in France in the 1930s. On the other hand, we show the evolution at work in Landry’s thought : from the optimum of population where the outlines and causes remain uncertain to the development of a theory of population which explains specific features of population movements, the « demographic revolution ».
