| 520 | _aThe Nazi seizure of Jewish property in the occupied East was inextricably linked to the persecution and the murder of the local Jews, which took place within earshot of their homes. Using a combination of German official reports, survivor testimonies, and evidence from war crimes trials, this article documents the successive waves of confiscation, corruption, and looting that accompanied the Holocaust in Reichskommissariat Ostland. A detailed case study for the town of Glebokie shows how the establishment of the ghetto and successive killing Aktions against the Jews provided opportunities for the local population and corrupt German officials to enrich themselves, alongside the official confiscation of all Jewish property by the district commissar. For Jewish survivors, the realization that their Christian neighbors could not wait to get their hands on Jewish property was especially painful. | ||
