520 _aUnder cover of war : genocide in the context of total warIt is by facing the horror of the Armenian genocide of 1915 that we can begin to place the Holocaust in the history of the 20th century. Since these two crimes took place under cover of two world wars, these events have unveiled the devastating logic and the power of a war of a new kind : the “total war”. The question of context allows us to leave out the absurd comparison between different kinds of genocidal acts which, by definition, were each unique – the only conclusion possible after such a comparative analysis. It is in this spirit that fits this article on the phenomena of genocide in the context of a total war.
