520			_aLes régimes de propriété déterminent l’organisation de l’espace, tout particulièrement la propriété foncière, qui a revêtu de tout temps une importance économique et symbolique spécifique, mais s’est imposée à la conscience des Européens avec une insistance particulière au XXe siècle. Dans ce siècle des changements radicaux de régime et de déplacements massifs de populations, elle a eu des impacts existentiels. L’hypothèse, vaste sur le plan historique, de cette contribution est que depuis l’époque de l’expansion européenne et des guerres de religion aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles au moins, la propriété est un instrument central du pouvoir étatique, servant à définir la composition de la population et les régions de peuplement. La juridicisation croissante et le lien établi entre la propriété et la protection de l’État-nation ont participé à son instrumentalisation politique, qui s’est transformée au XXe siècle en un outil à la totale disposition du pouvoir.

The history and functions of propertyProperty regimes determine how space is organised, particularly real estate property, which has always held a specific economic and symbolic importance, but which came to the forefront of Europeans’ consciousness in the 20th century. In this century of radical changes in political regimes and massive shifts of population, property had an existential impact. This article’s hypothesis, vast on an historical level, is that since at least the beginning of the period of European expansion and religious wars in the 16th and 17th centuries, property has been a central instrument for state power, helping define how the population is composed and which regions are inhabited. The growing juridification and the ties established between property and protection of the nation-state contributed to its political instrumentalisation, which over the 20th century became a tool fully in the hands of the powers that be.
