520 _aTeaching the history of the Holocaust in high school: current approaches and perspectivesTeaching the Holocaust involves certain educational practices that are specific to it alone, such as visits to memorial sites and meeting with witnesses. That this has been the practice throughout France for over twenty years is a remarkable achievement. To uphold our duty to remember, the French education system has deemed them essential. But are they necessary to helping students understand this chapter in history ? Have they helped diminish anti-Semitism among today’s youth ? Was everything done to answer the troubling question asked by many students : Why the Jews ? The question that needs to be asked is : What place does Jewish history, from a chronological-philosophical-political perspective, occupy within the French school curriculum ? This needs to be answered in order to seriously tackle the study of the Holocaust in schools.
