Il est aussi prouvé que le Royaume-Uni a bel et bien été le mauvais génie de la non-intervention : il a vu dans l’explosion d’un vaste mouvement social en Espagne la confirmation de ses craintes concernant la possibilité d’une révolution de type soviétique sur le continent. Avec la France, il a pesé de tout son poids sur la Société des Nations pour éviter l’application d’un système de sécurité collective ancré dans le Pacte fondateur de l’organisation. Dès lors, face aux interventions nazie et fasciste tout au long de la guerre, seule l’Union Soviétique pouvait sauver la République. En oubliant les entorses à la politique de non-intervention, le système international tel qu’il a fonctionné a porté un grave préjudice à cette dernière en contribuant de manière fondamentale à la victoire de Franco. | ||
| 520 | _aThis article reflects some of the most recent findings in Spanish historiography regarding the linkages between the Civil War and the international system. The first finding relates to the Italian intervention in Spanish affairs prior to the outbreak of the military coup. This was done by supplying the Monarchist conspirators, two weeks before the coup. It is also now abundantly clear that the UK was the evil genius of the non-intervention policy. The British Government interpreted the social revolution which broke out immediately after the coup as the fulfilment of its own prophecies about the dangers of a para-Soviet upheaval. With France, it then set out to impede the League of Nations from applying to Spain the collective security system embedded in the Covenant. Henceforth, facing Nazi and Fascist interventions the only possibility of resistance for the Republic lay with the Soviet Union. The breaches of non-intervention policy and the workings of the international system consistently damaged the Republic and helped Franco win the war. | ||
