520 _aDuring the second half of the twentieth century, Turkey seemed to have embarked upon a promising political transition towards parliamentary democracy with the arrival in power of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Often interrupted by military interventions, the transition, while incomplete, still enabled it to open accession negotiations with the European Union. This optimistic scenario has ultimately failed, making room for an authoritarian presidentialization – enshrined in the early elections of 24 June 2018.
