520			_aLes tensions, les affrontements et les guerres au Moyen-Orient sont souvent en résonance avec des événements tragiques qui remontent loin dans l’histoire. Certains ont été d’une telle violence qu’ils ont engagé l’existence même des communautés et des peuples qui les ont subis. Si ces drames s’inscrivent, dans le temps, à un moment particulier pour chacun, une séquence d’histoire bouleversante s’impose à tous : celle de la Première Guerre mondiale qui a entraîné des ruptures décisives dans la géopolitique du Moyen-Orient2. La région bascule alors d’un système impérial – l’Empire ottoman – à celui d’une configuration d’États d’abord sous tutelle mandataire puis indépendants.

Though each of these dramatic events took place at a specific moment in time, one shocking sequence of historical events affected everyone; the First World War resulted in significant disruption to Middle Eastern geopolitics. The region’s imperial system – the Ottoman Empire – had to give way to a configuration of states that had been placed under trusteeship, prior to independence.
