520			_aAfin de retrouver un établissement digne d’accueillir malades et indigents, la ville de Chalon débute en 1529 la construction d’un nouvel hôpital sur l’île Saint-Laurent. Sans l’aide de l’Église ou de la noblesse, elle parvient à le financer en faisant appel à la générosité des citadins et de la commune. Le soutien de l’Église se manifeste par des aides spécifiques sans que les religieux n’interviennent dans la gestion de la Maison-Dieu, entièrement administrée par la municipalité. Toutes les décisions sont débattues au cours des assemblées du conseil auxquelles participent les habitants qui sont à la fois partie prenante et donateurs.
