Abstract. – During their reigns, ruling Mauretania from their home at Caesarea, Juba II (ca 50 BC - 23 AD) and his son Ptolemaios (ca 14 BC - 40 AD) commissioned several portraits of superb quality. K. Fittschen published a systematic study, with dating and typology of the portraits. However, his unjustified interpretation of the portraits of the royal family in terms of an Augustan Bildnispolitik and disregard for the numismatic evidence which gives key dates for the life of Ptolemaios, led to serious dating errors. Unlike the portraits of Augustus, those of Juba II and Ptolemaios scrupulously record the kings’ age. A new chronology is proposed based on the age-defining features and revised dates for the life of Ptolemaios. | ||

Chr.), die das Königreich Mauretanien von der Residenzstadt Caesarea aus regierten, lieen eine Reihe höchst qualitätvoller Porträts von sich anfertigen. In einer systematischen Untersuchung hat K. Fittschen die Porträts datiert und Bildnistypen festgelegt. Die unkritische Übertragung des Paradigmas der augusteischen Bildnispolitik auf die Mauretanischen Könige und die Vernachlässigung der Anhand von Münzbildern eingegrenzten Lebensdaten des Ptolemaios führten jedoch bei dieser Studie zu schweren Fehldatierungen. Im Gegensatz zu den Porträts des Augustus ist die differenzierte Charakterisierung des Lebensalters in den Bildnissen beider unverkennbar. Anhand der Altersmerkmale einerseits und der revidierten Lebensdaten des Ptolemaios andererseits ergibt sich eine neue chronologische Ordnung der Porträts. | ||
