520			_aLe texte que Bernanos consacra au martyre des bienheureuses carmélites de Compiègne donna lieu à diverses réalisations génériques : théâtre, opéra et cinéma. En raison d’une réussite artistique exceptionnelle, l’œuvre de Poulenc assura aux Dialogues des carmélites leur postérité. Pourquoi l’opéra raconte-t-il mieux l’histoire de Blanche de la Force que le théâtre ou le cinéma ? Aux modifications que Poulenc fit subir au texte de Bernanos, il faut ajouter le traitement opératique de la prophétie. En rendant ambigus le sujet de l’énonciation et son destinataire, le chant donne à la prophétie son sens véritable : une parole qui ne prédit pas seulement l’avenir, mais conserve mystérieusement son actualité. Poulenc fait ainsi de son opéra plus qu’une représentation de l’histoire fabulée du martyre des carmélites : chacune de ses représentations en est une forme de réactualisation.

But the opera of Poulenc has passed on posterity Dialogues of Bernanos. Why opera is telling better the story of Blanche de la Force than theater or cinema ? To the modifications Poulenc made to the text of Bernanos, we must add the specific treatment of the prophecy thanks to Poulenc’s music, and the genre of opera. The song makes ambiguous the subject and the recipient of the prophetic utterances. Thus prophecy gets its true meaning : a word that non only predicts future events, but remains mysteriously meaningful for our time. Consequently, the opera of Poulenc is not only a representation of the fictionalized story of the Carmelites martyrdom : each representation of Dialogues of the Carmelites is a kind of new actualization of it.
