520			_aRésuméLes émeutes antisémites en août 1934 à Constantine découlent d’une dynamique de politique locale, introduite par la tentative du régime colonial français d’offrir une forme limitée de citoyenneté politique aux sujets coloniaux musulmans d’Algérie dans les années qui suivirent la Premier Guerre mondiale. La conséquence de ces réformes fut de renforcer les tendances locales à penser aux intérêts politiques et sociaux en termes ethno-religieux, et de rendre plus probables les conflits sociaux. Les rapports officiels du gouvernement émis à la suite des émeutes ont néanmoins attribué la violence aux haines ataviques entre musulmans et juifs, qui étaient prétendument un trait permanent du paysage social de l’Afrique du Nord. Du point de vue de l’État colonial, une telle interprétation avait l’avantage de voiler le fait que l’antisémitisme était construit par un processus politique en Algérie.

The effect of these reforms was to exacerbate local tendencies to think of political and social interests in ethno-religious terms, and to make social conflicts more likely. The government’s official reports in the aftermath of the riots nevertheless attributed the violence to the atavistic hatreds between Muslims and Jews that were allegedly a permanent part of the social landscape in North Africa. From the perspective of the colonial state, such an interpretation had the advantage of obscuring the fact that anti-Semitism was built into the political process in Algeria.
