520			_aAu sein des organisations luttant pour la reconnaissance de l’objection de conscience en France, le Service civil international se distingue par sa volonté d’obtenir pour ces réfractaires la création d’un service civil en remplacement du service militaire. En organisant des chantiers internationaux de travail volontaire et des opérations de secours d’urgence, le SCI entend démontrer par l’exemple l’utilité sociale d’un tel service. Il se voit ainsi confier, avant même la reconnaissance officielle de ce service de remplacement, la gestion des premiers objecteurs une fois ces derniers désincarcérés. Luttant alors à leurs côtés pour l’obtention d’un statut acceptable, le SCI apparaît comme l’un des acteurs clés de la reconnaissance d’un droit fondamental.
520			_aAmong the organizations fighting for the recognition of conscientious objection in France, Service Civil International stood out due to its belief in the creation of an alternative civil service that could replace military service for dissenters. SCI hoped to lead by example: it created international workcamps and emergency relief operations to illustrate the usefulness of alternative service. The organization thus found itself entrusted with managing the first conscientious objectors upon their release from prison, even before the legal recognition of this alternative in France. Fighting alongside conscientious objectors, SCI emerged as one of the leading figures in the struggle for the recognition of the fundamental human right to object.
