520			_aDans un contexte d’affirmation de la psychologie religieuse à l’Université, l’expérience mystique de Jean de la Croix devient, dans la France de l’entre-deux-guerres, un lieu exemplaire de la reconfiguration des relations entre les sciences humaines et la philosophie et la théologie catholiques. Une psychologie religieuse catholique, de nature plus expérimentale que spéculative, afin d’honorer la dimension surnaturelle de la vie religieuse, s’édifie progressivement, en particulier grâce à l’apport de la critique historique. Sous l’influence des sciences humaines, la théologie est elle-même poussée à opérer une mue en adoptant une approche phénoménologique. Avec le développement de la psychanalyse, l’expérience mystique se voit radicalement contestée dans sa pertinence même.
520			_aA Social Science Perspective on The Mystical Experience of Saint John of the CrossAs religious psychology became established as an academic discipline, during Interwar France, the mystical experience of Saint John of the Cross became paradigmatic of the shifting relationship between the social sciences and Catholic philosophy and theology. Catholic religious psychology, which, in order to acknowledge the supernatural dimension of religious life, was more experimental than speculative, began to gradually emerge, in particular thanks to the teachings of historical criticism. Under the influence of the social sciences, theology was also driven to adopt a more phenomenological approach. The very relevance of mystical experience was itself finally challenged by the development of psychoanalysis.
