À travers ce prisme, le drapeau national de l’Inde se révèle un outil clé dans l’élaboration d’une culture démocratique, à l’époque coloniale, nourrie des luttes sur le terrain et les circulations de modèles provenant d’un paysage international. La mise en place progressive des rituels publics et privés crée un régime émotionnel et jette les bases d’une communauté de sentiments à l’échelle nationale, déterminante pour consolider les idéaux démocratiques après l’indépendance. La libéralisation récente des usages du drapeau l’a transformé en un bien commun mobilisé aussi bien par l’ état que par les mouvements de contestation.

Through this lens, the national flag of India can be seen as a crucial tool in the development of the country’s democratic culture during the colonial era, which was animated by struggles on the ground and saw the circulation of international models. The gradual establishment of public and private rituals associated with the flag created an emotional regime and lay the foundations for a community of feelings at the national scale, which was crucial for consolidating democratic ideals after independence. The recent deregulation of flag usage has transformed the latter into a common good, mobilized by the State and protest movements alike.
