Les gouvernements italien et yougoslave financent en effet chacun une équipe triestine (l’Unione sportiva Triestina pour le premier et l’Amatori Ponziana pour le second), qu’ils font participer à leur meilleur championnat, manifestant ainsi l’appartenance de la capitale julienne à leur nation respective. Cette situation exceptionnelle et restée inédite – dans une même ville et un même stade se produisent deux équipes jouant dans deux compétitions de première division de deux États différents –, souligne combien le football constitue là bien plus que le reflet des relations internationales ; à Trieste, il est un protagoniste à part entière de l’évolution politique d’un territoire contesté dans un contexte de guerre froide. | ||
