We shall look closely at one aspect of the way groups function, in order to determine how a subject who does not suffer from a specific pathology can succumb to the fatal lure of idealisation and disinvest his or her own individual ego in favour of the Ideal Ego of a group. In such cases, the psychic functions normally exercised intra-psychically by the individual are delegated to the group and are transformed both as regards their content and form. We shall examine how the group functions as an ‘extended psychic membrane,’ notably in the relationship established with the Superego and the Ideal Ego. | ||
