L’auteur fait l’hypothèse que l’écrivain serait poussé par une force irrépressible à créer pour rester vivant, il chercherait à retrouver ses propres territoires inconnus, tentant de traduire, de représenter des mouvements psychiques, des éprouvés intimes, des angoisses archaïques de dispersion, de coupure et de morcellement notamment, datant du tout début de la vie. Par sa capacité à plonger dans les abîmes de son moi inconscient, l’artiste pourrait procéder à l’auto-engendrement d’une œuvre, territoire recréé sur les failles liées aux vicissitudes des relations précoces et sur le vide ressenti par l’absence de l’objet primaire, territoire fictionnel limité et unitaire qui pourrait aussi symboliser un moi reconstruit.

In his latest novel, La Carte et le Territoire, Michel Houellebecq reflects on the process of creation. This article argues that writers are driven by an indomitable force, spurring them on to create in order to remain alive, in an endeavour to discover territories unknown to self and ways of representing psychical processes, expressing them in words and voicing intimate feelings, archaic anxieties linked to feelings of dispersion, separation and fragmentation dating back to the very beginning of existence. Artists are capable of delving down into the abyss of their unconscious ego and are therefore also capable of self-engenderment through the work. This in turn functions as a territory recreated on the fault lines created by the vicissitudes of early relations and the feeling of emptiness engendered by the absence of the primary object, a fictional territory with clear limits and a sense of unity which might also symbolise the reconstructed ego.
