Artaud) Breton discovered Freud’s ideas with great enthusiasm in 1916 through the writings of Doctors Régis and Hesnard. Breton’s conception of the unconscious differs from Freud’s whose works were only translated into French some ten years later. This fact lies at the root of the misunderstandings between the poet and the psychoanalyst, as illustrated by the former’s visits to the latter in 1921 and Freud’s letters to Breton after the publication of Vases Communicants (Communicating Vessels) in 1932. Neither Breton nor Freud, however, let it rest there. This article explores the extent to which their own individual thinking brought Surrealism and psychoanalysis into greater interconnection.
