520			_aCette contribution traite du problème de la curiosité du point de vue de l’éducation et de la morale. La curiosité pose en effet le triple problème de l’intrusion dans la sphère d’autrui, de l’errance dans le sensible et de son rapport à l’orgueil et à notre volonté de savoir. Si elle participe d’une « sortie de soi », elle présente à l’excès une dimension prédatrice qui consiste à dérober les secrets d’autrui. Dans la tradition augustinienne, la critique morale de la curiosité est avant tout une critique de la sensibilité, de la concupiscence de la chair et de l’usage des cinq sens. À cette curiosité indiscrète nous opposons, à travers l’exemple du philosophe-voyageur à Varanasi, en Inde, la curiosité surprise, laquelle participe d’une atmosphère, ou d’une situation, sans appropriation d’un savoir ni irruption dans la sphère de l’autre. Toujours en recherche, elle demeure dans un rapport de bonne distance éthique qui rappelle la médiété aristotélicienne.
520			_aThis article deals with the problem of curiosity from the point of view of education and morality. Curiosity raises the triple problem of intruding into the sphere of others, of wandering in the sensuous world and of its relationship to pride and to our desire to know. If it is part of “going out of oneself”, it has a predatory dimension that consists in stealing the secrets of others. In the Augustinian tradition, the moral critique of curiosity is a critique of sensuousness, of the concupiscence of the flesh and of the use of the five senses. To this indiscreet curiosity we oppose, through the example of the philosopher-traveller in Varanasi, India, the surprise curiosity, which participates in an atmosphere, or a situation, without appropriating any form of knowledge or intruding in the sphere of the other. In research, it consists in a good ethical distance like the Aristotelian concept of the Mean.
