Mais comment, dans ce cas, comprendre le titre – si éduquer dénote bien la possibilité d’un apprentissage ? En revenant sur le concept de peuple, tel qu’il est modifié par l’expérience révolutionnaire de 1848, cet article cherche à repérer dans le texte de Flaubert l’irruption du registre de la sentimentalité dans le champ politique. Entre la sacralité majestueuse du peuple de 1789 et le spectre de la foule, Flaubert décrit une mutation : une société moyenne, la naissance d’un art nouveau, le lyrisme démocratique.
520			_aCritics have long tried to uphold Flaubert’s own admission about Sentimental Education: “a book about nothing”. However, how is one to understand the title – if education does indeed imply that something is to be learned? Examining the notion of the people, as reframed by the revolution of 1848, this article seeks to locate in Flaubert’s work the rising of the register of sentimentality in the political field. Caught between the sacred character of the people of 1789 and the specter of the crowd, Flaubert describes a mutation: the average society, the birth of a new art, a special kind of lyricism tied to democracy.
