Dès août 1914, le photographe Charles Lansiaux entreprend un vaste reportage photographique de la capitale française en temps de guerre. Un mois plus tard, il débute une collaboration avec la Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris à qui il vend, sur l’ensemble du conflit, près de mille photographies. La série intitulée « Aspect de Paris pendant la guerre » entend constituer une source pour l’historien de demain. Le présent article retrace l’histoire de la constitution de cette archive hybride, au croisement entre source visuelle et manuscrite. Il tente de faire comprendre comment la guerre à l’arrière, dans ses formes les plus diverses, a pu être appréhendée par la photographie.

As early as August 1914, the photographer Charles Lansiaux began an important photo-reportage of the French capital during wartime. A month later, he started to collaborate with the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris, selling them photographs throughout the conflict. This photo-collection entitled “Aspect de Paris pendant la guerre” aimed at providing future historians with sources. This article delves into the history of the creation of a hybrid archive, at the crossroads between visual and written sources. It examines how photography captured war beyond the front and at the rear, whilst emphasizing its diversity.
