Pendant presque tout le XIX e siècle, les auteurs et les éditeurs espagnols ignorent l’existence des adolescents. Ce qui est publié vise des lecteurs plus jeunes, avec un but didactique évident et selon des modèles déjà caducs dans d’autres pays. Les feuilletons et, plus largement, la littérature d’origine française (et dans une moindre proportion anglaise), viennent combler ce vide éditorial. Lorsqu’avec le tournant du siècle commence à paraître une littérature pour adolescents, nous trouvons des traductions de romans français et britanniques, mais aussi des originaux espagnols imités des feuilletons français, voire des dime novels américains. Leur succès dessinera les grandes lignes éditoriales du roman pour adolescents durant une bonne partie du XX e siècle.

The Birth of the Spanish novel in the wake of its French, English and American models During most part of the 19th century, authors and publishers ignored the existence of the juvenile readers. What was published in Spain was directed at younger children, written with clearly didactic aims and following norms which were in decline in other countries. This publishing void was filled with serials and popular literature mostly of French origin – and English, to a lesser degree. When at the turn of the century, narrative for adolescents starts being published, we find translations from the French and the English, but also original Spanish works, modeled on French serials or American dime novels. Their success among young readers set the publishers’ guidelines for what was to be the narrative for the youth far in the twentieth century.
