Regnard’s comic play Les Chinois (1692) started a vogue for Chinese themes on the French stage in the first half of the 18th century, be it in comedy, tragedy or musical works. Chinoiserie tended to become more realistic. This essay traces the rise of Chinese exoticism in French theatre, shows how multifarious its influence was and demonstrates what forms the growing realism took.
