Neither Too Early Nor Too Late

The duration of the therapeutic session for adolescents is always difficult to determine. It is also difficult to choose the time to start psychotherapy. Facing a mental disorder that the adolescent cannot express, the analyst is bound to choose a neutral attitude the author refers to as “committed.” Based on clinical experience, a reflection about the specificity of adolescent transfer and the role of the analyst should take place. “Neither too early nor too late” is a difficult ideal to achieve, and one that requires answering a complex question: “when is the right time to consult”?
