The author first explains the benefits of a psychoanalytical approach to images and representation, with a special emphasis on the importance of the first access to images. From a clinical point of view, she then tackles the problem of mistreated children, examining the therapeutic property of creating images using an experiment undertaken with a therapeutic group for children who are victims of mistreatment. In this clinical context, images are very often lacking, as is the case in numerous traumatic situations. During this therapeutic time, “creating pictures” with a simple sheet of paper is a very good way of furthering access to a transitional area that leads to playing and creativity. At the same time, these “things in images” are effective tools for psychological care.
