On the Latin Word remeligo

The Latin word remeligo which appears in a fragment of Afranius is sometimes translated by “She who causes delay,” sometimes by “Sucking-fish” according to an interpretation which goes back to Fulvio Orsini. An exegesis of a fragmentary lemma of Festus associated with an extract from the Adnotationes super Lucanum shows how some clever lexicographer influenced by late commentaries understood remeligo as “Sucking-fish”. A mistake of that kind, which was also due to the epitomized lemma of Paulus Diaconus and was spread by the zoological books of the 16th century, may have been known by Orsini whose edition of Festus was used for editing Afranius’s fragments.
