This article presents the initial results of one of the strands of a large-scale action-research project led by a multidisciplinary team between 2018 and 2021 focusing on the relationship between families and institutions. The care and education of children in today’s world is at the heart of institutional issues, and the family, like educational, health and social institutions, is undergoing major structural and organisational change, with consequences for individuals, groups and societies. Some insights are provided into how the links between families and secondary schools are organised. The author looks at the nature of the links that unite professionals and parents around their pupils and the values held by the schools that took part in the research. She offers a number of hypotheses to better understand these relationships from a fresh angle, between mistrust, resistance and creativity, on the part of families, professionals and, more generally, institutions.
