Failures in Child-Protection Services: An Inadequate Approach to Listening
Berger, Maurice
Failures in Child-Protection Services: An Inadequate Approach to Listening - 2002.
36
The rare assessments of the French protective system for children show that the results concerning the emotional and intellectual state of the children in custody are poor. One of the reasons of this failure is the lack of a setting allowing for an individual listening of the children. The causes for this state of affairs are described, as are the characteristics of a suitable listening-work with the child: continuity, duration, discretion, supervision. Only this kind of work is able to counterbalance the feelings of a child confronted with very inadequate parents: idealization, sticking to the inadequate parent, seduction, awe. A detailed clinical exemple illustrates these principles.
