Children’s representations of the elderly within an intergenerational structure - 2018.

31

This article examines in which ways an intergenerational (IG) program can change representations of older people in children of school age. We collected data from 78 children who were engaged in an IG program. This program involves an elementary school and a senior housing residence, with shared areas and a group of staff, thus allowing daily contact between children and older people. We assume that having IG relationships during a school year will result in positive views towards the elderly. Our results suggest that children changed their point of view during this year, especially concerning the physical strength of older people, their intelligence (for younger children) and their happy look (for older children). Our results emphasize benefits for children due to their exposure to this IG program, and the importance of strengthening IG relationships for a more tolerant and inclusive society.
