Emotions and the regulation of emotions: A developmental perspective
Brun, Philippe
Emotions and the regulation of emotions: A developmental perspective - 2015.
67
The issue of human emotional development may arise in the context of the development of skills for the regulation of emotions. Two positions have emerged in respect to this question: the cognitive point of view, which essentially describes capacities for the regulation of emotions, and the developmental approach, which focuses primarily on the regulation of behavior by emotions. This article discusses these different perspectives and proposes the idea that integration of the two approaches may be possible and useful in order to understand emotional development and its dysfunction in children. This alternative conception of emotional regulation sheds a different light on the ontogeny of human activity, and leads to the formulation of new psychotherapeutic propositions for the support of children whose emotional development has been perturbed.
