During the progressive disappearance of the silent movies in the face of the talking pictures, the majority of the writers, people of word, take position in favour of the first one, crystallizing the idea of an ideal film essence connected to the dumbness of the images, to the eviction of the verb and to the autonomy of the cinematographic art. Beyond the reactions to this artistic turning point, we go back over the reasons of this utopian construction and its inevitable disintegration.
