The project-grounded research approach sketched out by the author in the 1990s and further developed in various articles has been often misinterpreted and exposed to some criticism. This is why he found it necessary to make the conceptual clarifications that constitute the purpose of this essay. He was provided with the opportunity in a PhD meeting organized in Berlin in 2008, hence the didactic turn of the paper. The principle of project-grounded research lies on the careful distinction one needs to make between the design project and the design research project, as well as on the idea—inspired by pragmatist philosophy—that in order to think right, one must think “in project.” A diagram is used to outline the argument.
