This research analyzes the singular and little explored phenomenon of the making of leaders and leadership within the French armed forces. The current context shows a situation where it is increasingly a question of doing better with less. Indeed, the institution’s resources have been in constant decline since the early 1960s and it faces, at the same time, an ever more threatening international strategic context. Based on a qualitative methodology, the research reveals a progressive and structured production of French military leaders. Its theoretical contribution emphasizes an institutional mode of producing leaders and leadership that reveals the importance of the spatiotemporal dimension and of an idiosyncratic framework. It places the notion of command firmly at the forefront and highlights the importance of producing leadership rather than just leaders. The management recommendations that follow aim to improve French officers’ “human capital.”
