After recalling some of the lessons of Denis Cogneau’s Un empire bon marché (Empire on the Cheap), I focus on three points. The first concerns the effects of different types of colonization and questions the commonly accepted idea that settlements were less harmful than exploitation colonies. The second argues for a fine-tuned consideration of the colonial legacy at the local level when analyzing current structures. Finally, the third takes up the question of the North-South model of cooperation.
