Based on a qualitative analysis of poorly educated young people (PEYP), we found that subordinate counter-productive workplace behaviors can be triggered by the “dysfunctional” supervision of their manager. “Dysfunctional” supervision is defined as a passive form of supervision, wherein a manager, due to his or her incompetence and/or lack of interest, unintentionally hurts his/her subordinates. This “dysfunctional” supervision is likely to generate subordinates’ lack of autonomy, stress and/or perceptions of injustice, which can then result in the adoption of deviant behaviors.
