Autopsy of an attempt to emancipate the market - 2021.

The music industry is currently characterized by an oligopolistic concentration of big names. Facing a fragmented market disrupted by technological innovation, record companies, historically seen as intermediaries, merged into huge conglomerates. Those new entities were considered by some consumers and artists to be a threat to the diversity and authenticity of rock music. In this paper, we show how some artists tried to resist them. By claiming a radical shift in the mediation between artists and intermediaries, in particular through self-production, the punk music scene appeared to initiate a new and unconventional form of resistance.
