RésuméL’histoire de la gestion des banques espagnoles est un domaine inexploré et l’hypothèse chandlérienne selon laquelle la stratégie détermine la structure de la firme n’a pas fait l’objet de recherche pour ce secteur. Fondé sur de nouvelles sources archivistiques, l’article explique comment deux grandes banques espagnoles (la Banque Hispano-Américaine et la Banque Centrale) évoluent au XXe siècle vers le modèle chandlérien de « l’entreprise moderne ». Les conclusions sont conformes aux travaux récente de Whittington et Mayer sur les grandes entreprises industrielles en France, en Allemagne et au Royaume Uni. La tendance de fond vers la constitution de grandes entreprises managériales décentralisées est compatible dans le court terme avec le maintien de particularismes. The business history of Spanish banks is a field unexplored by scholars. The Chandlerian hypothesis that a firm’s strategy determines its structure has not received much attention in the history of large banking firms. Using new archival sources, we try in this paper to explain how two big Spanish banks (Banco Hispano-Americano and Banco Central) evolve during the twentieth century towards the Chandlerian “modern enterprise”. Our findings are consistent with the results of recent studies by Whittington and Mayer on the big European industrial firms of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The decisive trend towards big, managerial, and decentralized firms is compatible in the short term with the keeping of some particularisms.
