| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The business history of Spanish banks is a field unexplored by scholars. The Chandlerian hypothesis that a firm’s strategy determines its structure has not received much attention in the history of large banking firms. Using new archival sources, we try in this paper to explain how two big Spanish banks (Banco Hispano-Americano and Banco Central) evolve during the twentieth century towards the Chandlerian “modern enterprise”. Our findings are consistent with the results of recent studies by Whittington and Mayer on the big European industrial firms of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The decisive trend towards big, managerial, and decentralized firms is compatible in the short term with the keeping of some particularisms. |
