Résumé Le rejet du positivisme comtien par de nombreux intellectuels victoriens s’appuie sur une critique vigoureuse de l’idée même d’une religion de l’humanité, au nom d’une forme de religion existant en germe dès l’aube de l’humanité comme conscience d’un pouvoir supérieur inconnaissable, ainsi que sur l’importance accordée en général à deux sciences centrales, la biologie (évolutionniste) et la psychologie. L’hostilité d’Herbert Spencer et de Thomas Huxley envers Comte, quelles que soient leurs divergences, est particulièrement représentative de cette méfiance diffuse qu’évoquait le positivisme en Grande-Bretagne au XIXème siècle, malgré l’existence de quelques disciples influents. Au delà des polémiques particulières, une tradition empiriste fortement marquée par l’utilitarisme et l’individualisme économique, rendait, et rend encore, le dialogue difficile avec Comte et le courant positiviste. The rejection by many Victorian intellectuals of Comte’s positivism rests upon a vigorous criticism of the very idea of a religion of humanity, which contrasted with the idea of a religious feeling that existed in an embryonic form since the dawn of mankind, the consciousness of an unknowable superior power, and the importance of two main sciences, evolutionary biology and psychology. In spite of the divergences between the two men, Herbert Spencer’s and Thomas Huxley’s hostility towards Comte, is particularly representative of the mistrust of positivism in Great Britain in the XIXth century, in spite of a few influential disciples. Beyond specific polemics, the Anglo-Saxon tradition of empiricism, strongly influenced by utilitarianism and economic individualism, made – and still makes – the dialogue with Comte and positivism difficult.
